From Sunlight to Electricity - How Solar Power Works

Solar Power is energy generated from the sun. In just one hour the sun generates enough energy to power the world for an entire year! The suns rays can be captured by solar cells and converted into electricity. This electricity can then be used to run your electrical appliances and lighting.


  1. Solar Modules (panels) are installed on the roof or grounds of your property. They capture the suns energy and convert it into DC electricity
  2. Inverter. The DC electricity is sent from the solar modules to the inverter, which converts the DC electricity into AC electricity. This is identical to the power you buy from the electricity grid.
  3. Meter board. The AC power is sent to your meter board where it is available for use by the electrical loads in your home or business eg. lights, computers, appliances.
  4. Electricity meter. If your solar power system is producing more power than your home or business is using at that time, then the excess power is sent to the grid and recorded by your electricity meter. Your electricity company buys this power and you receive a reduction in your electricity bill. If you send enough electricity to the grid your electricity bills could be zero
  5. Utility Grid. You are still able to buy electricity from the grid as you normally do, for times when your home or business is using more power than is being produced by the solar power system eg. at night-time.
